We landed in beautiful weather, but that changed quickly. The second flight got to within hearing distance of Kovol when a wall of cloud came in and covered us over and the helicopter couldn’t land. It was forced to take the Hansen’s back to Madang. From then on the day alternated between clouds, intense rain, lightning storms and general bad weather. It looked like we might be the only team members to make it, but finally, at 5 pm the clouds cleared and the remaining two flights brought our entire team in. Our pilot had to stay the night as it was close to dark by the time the Stous family arrived!

After years of training and preparation, tomorrow is finally the day we’re moving into the tribe. We’re excited, Gerdine is nervous (having never been there before) and Oscar seems to be oblivious to things.

Funny how Christmas feels so different over here. We’ve been so busy getting ready to move into Kovol that it’s snuck up on us! We did manage to take a few days off to have a bit of a Christmas break though – even if there were boxes piled up around us all the while!

This week we’ve been working on the Hansen’s house. I’ve been able to steal a few moments for little projects on my house, but the work day is full getting Hansen’s house caught up. I meant to get this blog up a few days ago, but I’ve taken to crashing Read more…

We’re enjoying a manageable pace. 4 days between bush trips was just too fast for our family. We admire the Stous family’s endurance and Rhett’s optimism and grit that enabled him to go in while I’m out taking a break. The last few days have been incredibly refreshing. Time to Read more…
