For one of our post-literacy readers, I thought it would be fun to write a short story about a time Gerdine and I went to a Kovol garden with our friend. Readers need illustrations to go with them, so I’ve been working on illustrating my own story ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ve put them here for your viewing pleasure so you can chuckle with the Kovol people at my terrible drawing.

In the story, a friend takes us to his garden. On the way, I break a fence and almost fall down a landslide. This then prompts our friend to go ahead of us and shore up the road to support the bulky white people coming.
Arriving in the garden he shows incredible athleticism by putting a machete between his teeth and shimmying up a jungle tree like a pirate. Meanwhile, I get hold of an axe and spend about 4 times longer than the Kovol people around me to take down a small tree since all of my swings hit in different places. The story ends with our friend laughing at me for how useless I am.

While checking the text my friend was quick to point out to everyone who heard “he told me to say it like that!” He seems a little worried by how self-depreciating the story was ๐Ÿ˜€ I hope it gives people a chuckle as they learn to read and dig into it ๐Ÿ™‚

Our friend
On the way to the garden
Here’s the garden
That’s me breaking the fence
and so the road needs “repairing”
Machete in the teeth ready to climb
The branch chopping commences
Effortless axe work
Terrible axe work
Finally, me being laughed at
