It’s so much fun to be able to shoddily and quickly customise our house to fit our needs. Whenever it’s someone elses house (or the mission’s) the expectations feel higher. We don’t care a bit if we slop paint all over the floor while painting the roof, nor do we have the skill or drive to make all our furniture straight.
We’re going to be throwing an ‘amamas kaikai’, or literally happy meal, also known as a ‘wanbel kaikai’ or one stomach meal. The Kovol people have been hard at work with us for months now in house building. The men have been carrying all the wood we’ve milled back to the construction site, the ladies have been cooking for us and in general the community has been very, very hard at work to show us hospitality and make it known without doubt that they want us to be with them.
Wow, time flies. Here we are packing up to get ready to leave to go back to PNG for a 6:30 am flight tomorrow. This two weeks in Australia has been pretty fun, despite lots of dental and hospital visits!

We’re settling in on our 2nd day in Australia and we’re enjoying how fun and surprising things here are for us. Australia feels like a mix of the world we grew up with and the tropical world we have learned to live in over these last 4 years.

On Saturday evening while out for our family walk we spot a big group of people coming back from somewhere. We thought it was a party or something and greeted them happily. The grim faces told us something was up, and sure enough they told us that a child had hurt their leg. He was being carried back by one of the adults.
By the standards of what we’re used to at home we’re living very simply, but by Kovol standards, we’re unimaginably rich.
We open the freezer to get some food and we feel guilty – we’re the only ones here with a freezer. We run the tap to wash Oscar and we feel guilty – we’re the only ones with running water.
