Gardens are essential to the lives of the Kovoi. All their food is there; their work is there; and a lot of their lives happens there. Everyone has several gardens, old and new ones. They have garden houses or else a small shelter where they sleep. Families often work together or help each other in the gardens. It is often a steep hike to get there and if it rains, it is really muddy too.

So since I am always short on writing a blog, I am going to try to share pictures from our culture event today. We were hiking to a garden and clearing out the bush so that they can later plant something new there. In this case they wanted to plant peanuts. The women were cutting down everything apart from bigger trees and the man were cutting the trees. They do it in a line. The women work their way up the steep climb and the men cut the trees so they fall down the incline.

lots of gardens in the mountains
nice view
passing some houses
betelnut trees
a vanilla garden is in the background
cutting the bush with a long knife in line
treasure find: a bug. its meat will be eaten
looking for a big spider. It is meat…
another treasure: a tree that gives strings to make stringbags
paint is also available in the bush
guys cutting trees until the rain stops them
A garden house. Here we rest and eat lots of food before we hike up the mountain again

Thanks for praying! We certainly don’t mind brothers we’ve never met before standing behind us in this impossible task!
